On April 19, the Russian House in Madrid hosted the presentation of the Spanish translation of Sevastopol stories “Echoes of the Crimea and the Caucasus” by the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy as part of the “Books night” project organized by the Government of the Madrid Autonomous Community. The event was held jointly with the Association of Students and Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities “AELERUS”.
“Sevastopol stories” is a series of works describing the defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. They not only reproduce the heroism of the defenders of the city, but also embody the inhuman absurdity of war. Tolstoy, being a witness to the events described by him, conveyed in his works not only the greatness, but also the suffering of people caught in the whirlwind of military events.
Sergio Hernandez-Ranera Sanchez, translator, shared with the audience the creative process and subtleties of translation, discovering new facets and meanings of the text. Gala Arias, director of the Slavic literature series at “Akal” publishing house, supplemented the discussion by bringing her own view on the significance and influence of Tolstoy’s works in world literature.
The presentation of the Spanish translation of the “Sevastopol stories” was not only an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world classics, but also a step towards deepening cultural ties between Russia and Spain. She stressed the importance of preserving and popularizing literary heritage for future generations.
