Who is a compatriot
The concept of “compatriot” is regulated by the Federal Law “On the state policy of the Russian Federation in relation to compatriots abroad” dated 24.05.1999 №99-FZ, according to which:
- Compatriots are persons who were born in the same state, who live or have lived in it and have signs of common language, history, cultural heritage, traditions and customs, as well as descendants of these persons in a direct descending line.
- Compatriots abroad (hereinafter referred to as compatriots) are citizens of the Russian Federation permanently residing outside the territory of the Russian Federation.
- Compatriots are also recognized as persons and their descendants living outside the territory of the Russian Federation and, as a rule, belonging to peoples historically residing on the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as persons who have made a free choice in favor of spiritual, cultural and legal ties with the Russian Federation, whose relatives in the direct ascending line previously lived on the territory of the Russian Federation, including:
- persons who were citizens of the USSR, living in states that were part of the USSR, who received citizenship of these states or became stateless persons;
- immigrants (emigrants) from the Russian state, the Russian Republic, the RSFSR, the USSR and the Russian Federation who had the corresponding citizenship and became citizens of a foreign state or stateless persons.
Support of cultural and humanitarian initiatives of compatriots
Rossotrudnichestvo supports the initiatives of compatriots aimed at preserving linguistic and ethno-cultural identity, revealing creative potential, promoting traditional spiritual and moral values, as well as educating young people in the spirit of love for Russia.
To get explanations about the possibility of participating in Rossotrudnichestvo projects, as well as to come up with the idea of implementing your own event, you can contact the Agency’s representative office in your country of residence.
Resettlement to the Russian Federation
Rossotrudnichestvo, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and the administrations of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, participates in the implementation of the state program to assist the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad to the Russian Federation.
Compatriots wishing to move to Russia can get personal advice at the representative offices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia abroad, diplomatic missions of the Russian Federation in foreign countries (consular departments of Russian embassies abroad), consular offices of the Russian Federation in foreign countries, as well as representative offices of Rossotrudnichestvo abroad.
